Amazon's drone delivery: How would it work?

I think this article was very interesting because it puts the idea of drone delivery a little more into perspective. The problem I see with it was first, it said they only have a 10 mile radius from the Amazon distribution sites, so regular delivery methods will still need to be used to delivery products outside of the 10 mile radius. If this is the case, I don't see any good reason to have drones because they only bring up concerns, and delivery trucks are just as good. The main problem I see is that in order to minimize the act of shooting down drones, the article said they would have to fly at least 300 feet in altitude, however I looked up the altitude limit, and I found it was 500 feet. So if for some reason, a commercial drone would try to fly above 300 feet but end up at 500 feet, it would violate that rule and put departing and landing airplanes at risk. Although the idea sound high-tech and cool, I don't see the major benefit in using drones for delivery.

I think that this is cool, but it might be really chaotic. I think that it might be chaotic because if everyone in LA were to order one package per year, and all of those packages were to be delivered by drone, there would be around 10,000 deliveries a day. If there were that many deliveries, it would be noisy and visually distracting to have so many drones flying around. If there were that many deliveries, there might be one or two delivery hours in a day when all of the deliveries were made. Hopefully the FAA figures this out and makes sense of the logistics.

This was a very interesting article. Though it seems like a great idea there are always downsides. Like when it is dropped it could possibly get damage. Also maybe some of the grips could accidently drop the package and it doesn't have as good of a grip. It also might not have well enough of sterring as to pick it up. Yet some people can some how maybe shoot these down and steal the item that was being delivered. The last problem is if it gets delivedered to the wrong adress or on a part of the home that can't be accessed like some in the chimey or on the roof. Yet if that happened the people we ordered it wouldn't know because they can only know by seeing the robot or hearing it.

I agree with Max on all of these problems that could arise with drones, however to me, the most prominent problem is the idea of hacking. Especially as other countries' hacking capabilities expand, a hack into the drone delivery service could potentially lead to drones flying to wrong addresses and into unauthorized areas like over airports.

I really liked this article because it explains why the drones will work to deliver. It says that we a really close to be using them but I don't really thing it will work. The Federal Aviation Administration haven't even singed off am anything. Also you probably can't use the drones because it only goes 10 miles, so unless you live really close to one you can't use it. If Amazon want's to make the drones work the should make the drones have a better battery so the drones can travel to more people. At least maybe they wan last it any sort of weather. I don't think we should have drone.

I think that this is really interesting. There is a major problem with the idea of being shot down. The packages could be stolen or damaged. In addition, the drones may not be able to navigate right in front of the house, and may cause damge to the houses. However I would encourage companies to make these bold moves

Firstly, I want to comment on the development of artificial aerial navigation systems, and how they may drastically alter the way our society functions. Recently, the military has revealed their research into drone warfare, and have demonstrated the machine's effectiveness when they aided the U.S. in killing an ISIS official. They also reported that the strike team suffered absolutely no casualties, while eliminating multiple terrorist operatives. This displays the potential benefit of making drones commonplace, and how they can be utilized domestically and internationally. I also want to state that, although Siji's argument was mostly solid, the drone's flight systems would be uncanny in preventing it from going above the altitude limit. In addition, their small, fragile frames do not have any possibility to harm a commercial plane. Now, onto my theory. The main problem with using delivery drones, the article said, was that people with weaponry could shoot them down and reap their goods. However, there is a simple solution. If you equip drones with reasonably light armor, the vast majority of legal guns would be unable to damage them. Considering that the shooter would have to be able to compensate for bullet drop at a range, almost nobody would have the resources or experience to take down a drone. In addition, a small, rotating parabolic microphone could be installed, which would alert the drone to it's attacker's location. It could then adjust its flight path to steer clearly away from the danger. Please respond with any rebuttals, arguments, or additional information to my idea. Thanks for listening!

I overall think that this is a really cool and innovative idea. But it would still be problematic. In the video shown the drones were carrying really small packages and the only time when I get packages that small is when I order books. Another problem that will probably happen are safety issues. I am certain that if Amazon actually starts doing this, there will be at least a few deaths by falling packages or falling drones. And I know this is way out of the box but maybe some people can put bombs into the packages and deliver the package to a place (of course Amazon will probably check the boxes before being sent). I agree with Siji, I don't see the benefit in using drones for delivery all it really fixes is traffic (which in contrast to all of the other cars a few Amazon delivery trucks won't change anything)

I agree with Conor's first statement that drones will drastically alter our lives in a positive way. I drones, not only delivery drones, are the future. However, there are many problems that come up with these drones in the article.
