Cleaning with Greens

Toxic waste contaminates sites such as this one in Edgewater, N.J. Scientists have now tinkered with the genes in some plants. This allows those greens to help clean up the pollution.

I think that soil contamination is a large threat around the world. Soil contamination creates diseases and kills the surrounding wildlife. I think that using plants to create enzymes that will eat the PAH's and clean at 10% of the price. This will make it a lot easier to clean up trash, oil spills, chemical leaks, etc... Soon genetic modification may solve many other problems

The world is getting polluted. It does not get any simpler than that. Soil is one of those things that makes the world polluted. But the fact that scientists can "mess" with the genes in green plants, something we see countless times during the day, to make them clean our air and soil, is great. It makes our world cleaner. It is a great invention and I think that many other things may be invented based off of this. This is an amazing achievement. Scientists being able to tamper with the scientific design of plants to make them clean our Earth. Amazing.

I thought that this article was very interesting, especially the fact that they have gathered some microbes from plants, and are using them to clean spills in seawater, rivers, and streams. Sadly, I must disagree with this article. Even if it is good and saves the environment, I don't like it when nature's molecular structure is tampered with. I think that we must leave nature alone, because soon there will be no real nature left, and all modified things instead.

I thin it is really cool how green plants help destroy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oil spills in seawater, rivers and streams Also I think it is cool how it saves the United States from spending billions of dollars every year on such cleanup efforts. Worldwide, the cost may be about $50 billion. Another thing that I think is cool is how they used genetic techniques to alter — or engineer — the plants to produce chemicals, called enzymes, that can break down a type of PAH.

I think that this article was very interesting. Before, pollution was a big problem that had to be solved, and taking care of it worldwide would've cost billions of dollars. But now, by using these genetically modified plants, it will be much easier and waste less money. However, we can not really be sure about the dependability of these plants, because like the article mentioned, just because these plants work in labs, that does not mean they will work in real life situations.
