Normally, diamond rings on your mother's finger are the closest you get to a rock-hard, solid diamond. Not for Saturn, apparently. How is it possible that there is DIAMOND rain? I mean, I respect these scientists, but that sounds a little out-of-whack. Anyway, I think that it is really interesting that people can learn this without actually being able to go to the planet and look. Jupiter is such a huge planet with such a huge gravity pull that it is impossible to get any space rocket or rover or anything, really, without it sticking to the planet, just like glue. Although this is a very interesting article, I find it bewildering still that a planet like Earth has basically 1/100 of the diamonds on these two planets. WOW! Think about if we could find a way to travel safely to Saturn. Better yet, we can travel even deeper into the solar system to Uranus or Neptune where the diamonds have not melted because it is so cold. Imagine what we could do with such a vast amount of diamonds. The amount of diamonds on Earth are very scarce and an essentially "gigantic pot of diamonds." On Saturn and Jupiter, although it wouldn't be as useful to get our hands on because its melted HOW COOL IS THAT! The diamonds actually MELT on the surface creating an entire sea of liquid carbon! The fact that this happens so quickly is also amazing to me. It takes thousands of years for diamonds on Earth to form, but on plants that have a much different atmosphere, it takes a few minutes. By the time it reaches the ground, the carbon as become a diamond. Another possibility to why it is so fast is because that there is also methane involved. Perhaps, some of the atoms in methane create a reaction when combined with carbon. Maybe that is why the carbon is transformed so quickly. I can not believe 1,000 tonnes of diamonds are being created on SATURN each year! And diamond rain falls on Saturn and Jupiter! This is interesting, diamonds named "hail stones" eventually MELT into a liquid sea in the planets' hot cores! I have never heard anything like this! I have to say, this article is VERY interesting. Scientists are confident these observations are true. They say it all boils down to chemistry. Scientists are pretty keen and know what they are doing, so I also believe it is true. It is so amazing that there is a quick way to have diamonds fall! Unfortunately, the people that would wish to buy them would have to travel to the gas giants. It is just so fantastical to think that something like diamonds could rain down on planets thought to not have suitable enough environment. The way that they heated into graphite, then fell into rain, in about 30,000 km is amazing, but that it melts back into a boiling sea of liquid carbon that reheats in the air back into the beautiful hard stones we know of as diamonds, the toughest mineral of all, is so fascinating. Maybe in the far future, we will be able to create a spaceship that can travel to Saturn or Jupiter unscathed, and then collect a specimen of the rocks to tell if they really are diamonds.

I think that if we wan't to get a larger supply of diamonds we should start a space project that could get us to saturn safley. Once we get there the people in the space ship could bring a drill to go to saturns core and get a life supply of diamonds. I think that this would be effective because a lot more people want diamonds but the problem is that since that they are so hard to find they cost a lot of money. This would be better because if there are more diamonds then they would cost less and the people that like diamonds could have them more easily.

I don't agree with Grace that the idea of diamond rain on Jupiter and Saturn is insane. I think that Earth has environments made to support humans, and Jupiter does not. If Earth can produce diamonds, who are we to say that Jupiter and Saturn, whose environments we can only guess about, can't produce diamonds? This is something truly amazing. I mean, diamond rain? That is something no one has ever heard of except in their imagination. The aliens on Saturn and Jupiter must be rich. If we ever were able to make more efficient ways to get to these planets then that would completely change the value of diamonds. They would still be pretty expensive, but we would still be able to get more and more. Scientists could also find out how the diamonds were produced and mass produce them. That would completely drop the value of diamonds though. It might not be such a great idea for that reason. But this is still really cool!
This article was really interesting! I did not know that the carbon element was on other planets so this makes me wonder what other elements could be on different planets. I'm also confused with this article though because the title is saying that these diamonds are on Saturn and Jupiter. However, in the article it says that Uranus and Neptune and the important gemstone planets and have the right climate to create these. Why can't these diamonds be produced on these planets? I think that these diamonds are really amazing because on Saturn they are created from dark storms that were soot! I would not imagine that something of waste such as soot could become something so beautiful.
I also agree with Mina. Before when we were learning about plants, we were learning about adaptations. I think that inanimate object could also adapt to their environment and the environment could adapt to them. In a way these diamonds are animate because they are changing form and shape. We shouldn't just assume that only we can do the best. Other places, planets, galaxies, and even universes could do so much better. No one knows, but it could be true. And if we can adapt, diamonds can too. Elements have been on planets much longer than we have.

I chose this article because I thought that it had good information on a subject that many of us haven't even heard of. I personally had a lot of fun reading the article. However, many people are so amazed that there are diamonds on Saturn and Jupiter. But, we wear diamonds here because they are so rare they are like regular rocks their because they are very common. I found it so intriguing that the air pressure that it turns mehtane into soot, and the pressure is so high that years and years of pressure on earth are equal to 5 seconds of pressure on saturn and jupiter. This is one of the coolest things that I have ever read! Diamond rain... I know that acid rain is real... but diamond rain! I think that the scientific process of the transformation from carbon into diamond is fascinating! As Richie said, The diamonds MELT onto the surface creating a se of liquid carbon (in his exact words... hopefully). When carbon turns into diamond, it must take a few years or even a few decades. But this happens in a few minutes or so! We just bent time... kind of. Think about it.

If the diamonds melt on the surface of the planets however, if we retrieve them, they will probably just be carbon. After all, diamond is just a form of carbon like graphite, so it probably won't cause a "diamond rush" on Earth however it could cause a "carbon rush".
