Why Travel Bans Will Only Make the Ebola Epidemic Worse

This article talked about something that not many people think of. Ebola appears to be such a huge threat in our minds and in the news that it's almost like the developing apocalypse. But in reality, there are many things that cause far more deaths than ebola like car accidents. This is an interesting link that I found that talks about how bad our judgement is towards scary things like disease epidemics:

http://www.newstatesman.com/health/2014/08/few-things-are-much-scarier-ebola

Because of the fear of eBola, we have done airport screening, which will most likely not detect a single case, according to a Canadian study on an an airport screening campaign for a different epidemic. I agree about how closing access to the disease area in West Africa will only make the epidemic spread further because it will be tougher for doctors to help, the disease will eventually totally wipe out West Africa, and there would be no end in sight to the crisis. I thought it was interesting evidence that after 9/11 when nobody got on plane flights, it actually didn't stop influenza from spreading. It showed that staying away from the disease helps much less than helping to fight the disease in the infected area. It proves a lot about the faults in how we think about disease outbreaks like ebola.

I agree with Siji. Even though Ebola is terrifying, the chances of it happening are very small. At the point at which we're dauntlessly screening airports instead of creating a vaccine for an illness, there's something wrong.

Ebola I was at first a little confused if Ebola came from fruit bats or monkeys but now I under stand. I would like to reference what Siji said and say that yes many things like terrorists are much scarier than Ebola but if Ebola goes into the hands of people like terrorists who would want to spread it to cause a problem wouldn't then it be much scarier. It would be scarier because they would know how to spread it making it even worse than that and if they had suicide bombers it would be less bad if there was only a 70% chance that the terrorist would die. I also think that even though canceling flights is bad there are two good things about it which are it says it would stop Ebola panic which is a good thing and it says that the reason they do not do it is because they do not want to limit recources but it is not like we Import many things from west Africa. Speaking of terrorists and planes let me just say what if terrorists loaded a plane with chemical weapons and tried to do an other 9/11. The problem to this is even if we shot down the plane the germ particles would still fly everywhere around the target population of people. Allow me to also state that recently Ebola was also shown to transmit through the air so even if the nurse had a hasmat suit they would still need a gas mask.

I thought this article was interesting. I believe it is very serious that the government canceled a plane flight because of Ebola. Ebola is a big deal, but I believe people should go where they need to go, however Ebola is dangerous and I understand why they canceled it. I can not believe someone had Ebola and went on the flight without knowing they had close contact with a dying Ebola patient days before the trip.
I did some research on Ebola and how to stay away from the disease, and this is the link I found.

I believe this link is very useful for how to stay away from Ebola.

I don' think that it's right to isolate a country just because of a disease. Plus, like Siji said, there are things far more dangerous in the world that we need to look out for.

I thought this was very interesting because when a deadly global virus is spreading around the world, the thing people would last think of doing is keeping their ports open. However, I do agree with the fact that stopping Ebola at the source is the way we are going to end this terrible epidemic. It is also a proven fact that you are more likely to win the lottery than get Ebola, but that still doesn't mean we shouldn't be aware and try to help. The part about airport security not detecting any virus during the SARS epidemic was also very interesting because this proves that you can't always trust what the officials say. All in all, unless you are over eighteen, try to stay out of West Africa, but DONATE PLEASE!

I think that it is strange how Ebola had gotten to America so i'm a little scared but the topic is very interesting because Ebola is a sort of world crisis now and this article has lots of interesting facts about it.

I agree with siji, hunter, juliana, william, and richie because they brought up very interesting points and I believe all of you are right because it there are many more things that are more dangerous than Ebola even though it is a global epidemic an all. But seriously, stay away from West Africa, or all of Africa, and wash your hands every single lunch and recess and whenever you have to. Plus I found these links that you guys might like... it is on how to prevent ebola.

I forgot I also agree with mina for the same reasons I just forgot to add her on my previous comment.

I thought this article is really interesting. I can't believe that they canceled a flight just because of Ebola. At first Ebola was very small in Africa, but now it has spread all over and it is a big deal. It is showing up all over the new to be careful about Ebola. Ebola is spreading faster than I thought. I also agree with William that is is not right to isolate a country .

I agree with Siji. Ebola is scary, and it is a thing that we should watch out for. I think it is a smart idea for airports to screen people and make sure that they do not have Ebola. I just hope that there are doctors helping to cure this disease.

I agree with Siji. Ebola is a horrible disease, but we are getting a little extreme with trying to keep it out. Screening at airports are useless and trying to close airports all together is a horrible idea. We haven't really learned from our mistakes because we are really just thinking about doing the things that we did during the last pandemic, and those strategies ultimately did not work. Like the article said, I think the only way to keep the rest of the world safe is to take care of where the virus is the worst, which would be West Africa.
